GLEN OF IMAALINTERRIERI,
glenni, pötkö, maastonakki, karvakorva.....rakkaalla lapsella on monta nimeä, eikä tässä suinkaan olleet vielä kaikki.
Etsimme mieheni kanssa 2000 luvun alussa meille sopivaa koirarotua. Luettiin koirakirjoja ja selattiin nettiä, mutta sitä oikeaa ei vain tuntunut löytyvän. Kunnes kierreltyämme kerran Messukeskuksen voittajanäyttelyssä Onni löysi meidät ja rotuvalinta on tehty. Onni oli ihastuttava glenniherra, joka käveli käytävällä vastaan ja hymyili meille koko glenninnaamallaan. Pari pusuakin taidettiin saada. Ja siitä se sitten alkoi, glenninelämä meidän perheessä. Ensimmäinen glennimme oli brindle Veeti herra, joka muutti meille Kotkasta Kennel Miimokselta. Muutaman vuoden jälkeen totesimme, että täytyyhän Veetin saada koirakaveri ja niinpä nuori huligaani Finski saapui vauhdittamaan päiviämme Isosta-Britaniasta, Kennel Jeonty:lta.
Veeti ja Finski ovat jo siirtyneet sateenkaarilaumaan ja seurailevat tapahtumia pilven reunalta. Tällä hetkellä meillä kotona asustaa vain yksi blondi pojan koltiainen Samu, joka on syntyjään Tanskasta, Kennel Hammermölle:n kasvatti.
Jos olet harkitsemassa glenniä omaksi roduksesi, Koiraan kannattaa ehdottomasti tutustua ihan "livenä". Mitkään kirjat tai kuvat eivät anna todellista kuvaa glennin koosta ja voimavaroista. Glenni on noin 20 kiloinen voimanpesä, joka on hyvä tuntea käsissä ja talutushihnassa. Glenni on erinomainen seuralainen kotisohvalle, lenkkipolulle, mökille tai mihin tahansa koiraharrastukseen. Mutta koirapuistoon ja naapuruston kaikkien koirien kaveriksi siitä ei ehkä ole. Glenni on pesunkestävä terrieri, joka toimii ennenkuin miettii ja varmasti kyseenalaistaa kaikki säännöt, mutta josta johdonmukaisella kasvatuksella saa upeimman mahdollisen perheenjäsenen, joka ei jätä ketään ilman pusuja eikä iloista hännänheilutusta. Glenni on aina valmis toimintaa ja vauhtia riittää, mutta kotioloissa se on rauhallinen seuralainen, joka mieluusti valitsee näköalapaikan pötköttelyyn ja tarkkailee sieltä muiden tekemisiä.
Glennillä on trimmattava turkki, joka koostuu karkeasta päällyskarvasta ja pehmeästä ja lämpimästä aluskarvasta. Kotikoirakin on 2-3 kertaa vuodessa nypittävä, jotta turkki pysyy koiraa suojaavana ja lämpimänä. Muuten riittää harjaus / kampaus silloin tällöin. Hoitotoimenpiteitä turkin hoidon lisäksi kuten kynsien leikkaamista ja korvien puhdistamista kannattaa kuitenkin harjoitella ahkerasti pennun kanssa, jotta ne sujuvat sitten aikuisenakin.
Glenni sopii moneen harrastukseen. Meidän mieluisin harrastus Veetin ja Finskin kanssa oli ehdottomasti pitkä lenkit ja etenkin mökkimetsissä, missä pojat pääsivät juoksentelemaan irrallaan. Molempien kanssa harjoiteltiin tottelevaisuutta eli tokoa. Veeti suoritti tokossa koulutustunnuksen TK1 ja läpäisi BH kokeen. Finskin kanssa kisattiin virallisissa toko kisoissa jokunen kerta. Samu on tosi innokas tokoilija, mutta erityisen innostunut hän olisi veri jäljestä eli mejästä, jos vain aika itselläni riittäisi harjoitteluun ja ennenkaikkea niihin löytyisi metsä, jossa olisi lupa treenata. Eli glenni on erinomainen harrastuskaveri, joka soveltuu oikeastaan lähes kaikkeen.......hmm, vesipelastusta en ehkä näkisi luontevimpana lajina, mutta kaikkea muuta kyllä.

GLEN OF IMAALTERRIER
At the time we were trying to find suitable breed for our family there were no mention of glens in any books we happend to find. Internet was already excicting J but we didn’t find glens even there. So, we decided to go to the biggest dog show we have in Finland to see the breeds we were interested in, at least a little bit, and maybe find the right breed. After few hours at the show we were quite desperate. Maybe it’s better without a dog…….But life has funny surprises. Just when we nearly gave up, a blue brindle glen boy walked towards us in the corridor. And we didn’t need to search no further. We knew this was the breed we wanted. It took nearly a year before we got Veeti, our own blue brindle boy from Kennel Miimoksen. Well, and when you have one glen at home you suddenly find yourself dreaming of another. My dream took 6 years before wheaten boy Finski flown to us from Kennel Jeonty in UK.
Veeti and Finski are not the only glens in our pack. Our pack includes also some lovely glen girls who are living with their own families but intend to bring joy to Veeti’s and Finski’s life by visiting us or joining us for dog shows or other trips.
If you are considering glen as your possible breed, you should always see at least one alive. No pictures or stories can really give the impression of the dog. Grown up glen is some 20 kg of muscle with huge power in his / her body. Glen is called medium size dog but actually he is quite a big one, only on short legs J So, it very good to feel the size and strength in your hand and on leash before making the final decision of the breed.
Glen was breed to be the all purpose “handy man” in Irish farms in Glen of imaal area. They helped farmers to hunt and keep farm clean of rats and other pests. Glen was supposed to be able to work by himself, work hard in any condition and be fearless in any situation. So, glen is a huge character combined with extremely strong body. He needs a calm and assertive guidance to learn good manners at home and outside. Adult glen may not tolerate all the other dogs in your neighbourhood and you may not be able to take him in dog parks. But if puppy is properly socialized and introduced to other dogs and breeds, glen may well be happy in any situations with other dogs.
Glens coat is harsh and weather proof. It has two layers. Soft and warm under coat is covered with rough over coat. To keep the coat in condition and protective it needs to be stripped two or three times a year. Stripping means taking off the long and dead over coat and some of the under coat if there is too much of it. Weekly treatments to do are clipping the nails, combing the coat, checking the ears and eyes for dirt
Glen is quite relaxed companion at home. Usually he takes a good spot to watch what’s going on with fellow humans and reload his batteries. But all this relaxations is wiped away in seconds if he notices a chance to go out or do something else interesting. Glens love challenges. It may be finding the way to enter the sofa and get good cuddling or it may be nice long walk. Some glens do tracking, some obedience and even agility. Maybe water rescue is not most suitable hoppy but anything else go J
