The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the two Welsh Corgi breeds, the other being the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, with which it shares its development history. While the modern Pembroke Welsh Corgi originated fairly recently in Pembrokeshire, Wales, dogs similar to Welsh Corgis have been around in the region since at least the 11th century, when they were brought over by Vikings and Flemish weavers. These hard-working, low set dogs were ideal for driving herds by nipping at cattle’s feet and their presence was restricted to farms. It was only in the 1920s that a Corgi Club was formed and the dog entered the show ring. Subsequent years saw breeders improving on the dog’s appearance. In 1934, Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis were recognized as separate breeds.
